What should a renovation fleece quote include?

With renovation fleece, the difference between two quotes rarely lies in the wallpaper itself, but in what is or is not counted around the hanging. These items belong in the quote, each with its own line or a clear note.

When comparing, look at the surface area first. The pricing tier applies to the whole job, not per room. A single bedroom therefore falls into a higher rate than the same room as part of the whole house, as the examples of renovation fleece per room show.

Then look at what is in the m² price. With us, sanding, the fleece, the adhesive and one coat of latex paint are always part of the complete package. If another company lists adhesive or sanding as a separate item, add it to the m² price before you compare.

How do you compare renovation fleece quotes?

First put them on the same basis: the same m², the same package, the same colour and the same preparation. Only then does the final amount tell you anything.

With or without latex paint. Hanging and filling renovation fleece without latex paint costs €13.49 per m² above 150 m² with us, compared with €14.99 with latex paint. A quote that comes out €1.50 per m² lower may simply be a quote without the paint coat.

That paint coat still has to go on afterwards. If you have it done separately, you pay €12.99 per m² for one coat in RAL 9010 or 9016. The difference between renovation fleece with or without paint therefore lies mainly in who applies the paint, and when.

Ready for wallpaper or not. The m² price for renovation fleece applies to a wall that is ready to be papered. If a wall is too uneven, a thin skim coat of plaster goes underneath first: €17.49 per m² for 100 to 200 m², falling to €14.49 per m² from 401 m², materials included. We check whether a wall is ready for wallpaper during the on-site survey.

The materials. We hang Intervos renovation fleece, which Intervos supplies in weights from 130 to 200 grams per m². We paint with Sigmatex Superlatex Matt, to which Sigma gives scrub resistance class 1 under NBN EN 13300, the highest class for cleanability. Ask with every quote which fleece and which paint are included.

What does a renovation fleece quote look like? An example

This is what a renovation fleece wallpaper quote looks like with us for a new-build home with 210 m² of wall that is ready for wallpaper. One 20 m² wall in the living room gets a dark colour in two coats, the rest is RAL 9010. The measurements are an assumption, not an average.

Prices exclude VAT. For new-build homes, 21% VAT usually applies. The VAT rate is stated in the quote.

Hanging, filling and painting renovation fleece in a complete home takes us 3 days. If a thin skim coat of plaster is needed first, its drying time comes on top.

The biggest difference lies in the pricing tier. If you have the ground floor done first (90 m²) and the upper floor later (120 m²), those become two jobs: 90 m² at €18.99 and 120 m² at €15.99, each with a call-out charge.

Together that is €3,827.88, compared with €3,247.89 if everything falls under one job, both without the surcharges for the feature wall. For exactly the same walls you would pay €579.99 more. You only see that if the pricing tier and the call-out charges are listed separately in the quote.

If neighbours in the same new-build development have their walls finished at the same time, the neighbour discount for new-build homes also applies: €0.25 per m² for 2 homes, €0.50 for 3, €0.60 for 4, €0.80 for 5 and €1.00 for 6 or more homes.

Isn’t the quote with the lowest price per m² simply the cheapest?

Only if it covers exactly the same work. A low price per m² becomes expensive if a paint coat, a thin skim coat of plaster or a second job turns up afterwards.

So look at the total for the whole home, not at the rate per m². In the example above, the same 210 m² split into two parts costs €579.99 more, without a single extra strip of fleece being hung.

Also check when the walls are inspected. We measure up and check every wall during the on-site survey, before the work starts. Whatever turns up there goes into the final price, so there are no extras on the bill afterwards.

Finally, look at who will do the hanging. Ask whether the wallpaper hanger is employed by the company on the quote, or whether the job is passed on to someone else. With us, one of our 40 in-house wallpaper hangers does the work, with the same crew from start to finish.

How do you request a renovation fleece quote?

The more you send with your request, the closer the quote will be to the final price:

• the m² of wall per room, and whether ceilings are included;
• whether it is a new-build home, and when it is handed over;
• the colour, and which walls get a colour;
• whether there is still old wallpaper on the walls;
• when you would like us to start.
