Pre-Painted Glass Fleece Wallpaper: Does It Save a Coat?

Geert Jan Hendrik, director of Bouwsector BelgiëBy the Bouwsector België team, 97 in-house tradespeople · reviewed by Geert Jan Hendrik, director · updated

With glass fabric, pre-painted saves a coat: Sigma recommends two coats of wall paint on non-pigmented glass fabric and one on pigmented glass fabric. With glass fleece it saves no coat according to the same data sheet, because the advice there is one coat in both cases. Leaving it unpainted is not the intention in either case.

What is pre-painted glass fleece wallpaper?

Pre-painted, also called pigmented, means that the fleece or fabric has already been given a coat of colour at the factory. So it does not come off the roll white or natural, but with an opaque base.

The Intervos price list of 1 August 2026 includes these types of glass fleece and glass fabric:

IntervosPre-paintedWeightRoll
Glass fleece 1816No50 g/m²50 by 1 m
Glass fleece 1818 Pre-PaintedYes110 g/m²50 by 1 m
Glass fleece 1817 Pre-PaintedYes130 g/m²50 by 1 m
Glass fleece 1819 Pre-PaintedYes190 g/m²50 by 1 m
Pre-Painted Glass, glass fabricYes120 to 220 g/m²50 by 1 m

Pre-painted or not is the second choice. The first is the type, and for that it is best to compare glass fleece, glass fabric and renovation fleece side by side.

Does pre-painted save a coat of paint?

That depends on the type. In the data sheet for Sigmatex Superlatex Matt, Sigma states how many coats are needed for each substrate:

WallpaperSigma’s adviceDoes pre-painted save a coat?
Glass fabric, not pigmented2 coatsYes, from 2 to 1 coat
Glass fabric, pigmented1 coat, sometimes a second for coverageThis is the pre-painted version
Glass fleece1 coat, sometimes a second for coverageNot according to this sheet

For glass fleece, the data sheet makes no distinction between pre-painted and not. A pre-painted fleece does already have a coat of colour, and that can help to achieve coverage with one coat. But it is not a guaranteed coat less with glass fleece.

Pay attention to the paint as well. In the system sheet for glass fabric, Sigma specifies one coat of Sigmatex Superlatex Matt for pigmented fabric, but two coats of Sigma Pearl Clean Matt. So the paint you choose also determines whether that coat is really saved. When painting glass fleece and glass fabric, we therefore always look at the paint and the coats together.

Can you leave pre-painted glass fleece unpainted?

No. The word pre-painted sounds like finished, but that is not what it means. In Sigma’s system, glass fleece and pigmented glass fabric always get at least one coat of wall paint.

That finishing coat does more than add colour. It evens out the wall across the joins and gives a surface you can wipe clean. According to Sigma, Sigmatex Superlatex Matt has scrub class 1 and a matt gloss level of about 1.9 GU.

Unpainted, you would also see the drops. A pre-painted fleece or fabric is also made to be painted after hanging, just like ordinary glass fleece.

When do you choose pre-painted?

With glass fabric the choice is clearest. If you want a texture that covers in one coat of paint, pre-painted fabric fits Sigma’s advice. All that remains is to choose the texture: smooth, herringbone, diamond or coarse.

With glass fleece, the colour you want matters most. A light colour on a pre-painted base is more likely to cover in one go than a dark colour. If you choose a deep colour, a second coat may still be needed.

The same exists for renovation fleece. Intervos has pre-painted renovation fleece of 160 and 200 grams per m². The choice between renovation fleece and glass fleece therefore does not depend on pre-painted or not.

What does it mean for your price?

In our price list, glass fleece and glass fabric appear on a single line, with no distinction between pre-painted and not. The complete package costs €16.99 to €20.99 per m², including the wallpaper, sanding, hanging, filling the joints and one coat of paint in RAL 9010 or 9016.

Prices exclude VAT. For the renovation of a home more than 10 years old, VAT is usually 6%.

A second coat is a surcharge. That is why the question of how many coats your wall needs has to be answered beforehand and not afterwards. For your own wall, what fibreglass wallpaper costs per m² therefore depends on the m² and the number of coats.

How do we choose the wallpaper for your wall?

This work is done by one of our 40 wallpaper hangers, like the other 97 permanent tradespeople. We hang with Intervos and paint with Sigma paint, in the same job. Whoever hangs also paints, and so knows which wallpaper needs which paint.

In your request, state the colour you want and whether you are looking for smooth glass fleece or textured glass fabric. The number of coats will then already be in the free quote you receive within 24 hours, and a second coat will not appear afterwards. At the site survey we look at the walls.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Not with us. In our price list, glass fleece and glass fabric appear on a single line, with no distinction between pre-painted and not. The complete package costs €16.99 to €20.99 per m², excluding VAT.

How long is a roll of pre-painted glass fleece?

At Intervos the pre-painted glass fleeces come on rolls 50 metres long and 1 metre wide. The weight differs per type, from 110 to 190 grams per m².

Is there also pre-painted renovation fleece?

Yes. Intervos has pre-painted renovation fleece of 160 and 200 grams per m². That too is painted after hanging.

Can pre-painted glass fleece be painted in a dark colour?
