Having a feature wall or half wall wallpapered

Geert Jan Hendrik, director of Bouwsector BelgiëBy the Bouwsector België team, 97 in-house tradespeople · reviewed by Geert Jan Hendrik, director · updated

Having a feature wall or half wall wallpapered works well as a one-off job or together with the rest of your home. Wallpapering with standard or patterned wallpaper costs from €18.99 per m² with us, excluding VAT. The work lies mainly in the setting out: a feature wall stands out, so the pattern and, for a half wall, the horizontal line must be exactly right.

What does it cost to have a feature wall or half wall wallpapered?

You pay per m² of wallpapered wall. Which line of our price list applies depends on the wallpaper you choose.

Prices exclude VAT. For the renovation of a home over 10 years old, 6% VAT usually applies.

The renovation fleece prices follow a sliding scale based on the area of the whole job, from 30 m². The same price list includes a small-job surcharge of €249.99. It applies to a job smaller than 50 m². If you only have a feature wall wallpapered, that surcharge is therefore added.

Two worked examples with patterned wallpaper. A feature wall 4 metres wide and 2.60 metres high is 10.4 m² and costs from 10.4 × €18.99 = €197.50.

A half wall 4 metres wide, wallpapered up to a height of 1.20 metres, is 4.8 m² and costs from 4.8 × €18.99 = €91.15.

If the feature wall is your entire job, the small-job surcharge of €249.99 is added: €447.49 and €341.14 in total. What is included in the price for your wallpaper is stated in the final quote after the site survey. You can work out your own m² with the m² calculator.

What should you look out for with a feature wall or half wall?

For a feature wall you choose the wall you look at first, such as behind the sofa, behind the bed or around the dining table. A wall without a window or door is the calmest option: the pattern then runs on without interruption and there is less cutting.

With patterned wallpaper, the pattern starts at the spot where you see it first, usually the middle of the wall, and work proceeds from there to both sides. That way the motif lines up at the corners. That is what patterned wallpaper is all about: the pattern repeat and the match from drop to drop.

With a half wall, the line is what matters most. Floors and ceilings are rarely exactly level, so the line is set out with a laser or spirit level, not measured from the skirting board. The top edge of the wallpaper is cut neatly along it. If you want a rail or moulding at the transition, discuss it during the site survey; fitting a moulding is not in our price list.

If it is a single wall with a large image, photo wallpaper is the logical choice. We then charge for photo wallpaper installation per wall instead of per m².

Doesn’t wallpaper on a single wall stand out if the wall is crooked or uneven?

Yes. A busy pattern does not hide a poor wall. A pattern distracts the eye from a stain, but it shows a crooked wall better. Horizontal lines in the motif then visibly run out of true against the ceiling or skirting board.

Bumps and holes also show through, and patterned wallpaper does not bridge cracks. In a new-build home, the house settles and shrinks over the first few years, plaster cracks along with it, and a hairline crack like that runs straight through your pattern. They are ordinary cracks in new homes, but on a pattern you do see them.

Renovation fleece does keep hairline cracks out of sight. That is why a combination often works well: renovation fleece on the other walls and patterned wallpaper on one wall.

The feature wall therefore has to be flat, dry, dust-free and primed. Run through the four conditions for a wall that is ready for wallpapering beforehand, and you will know where you stand.

Who wallpapers your feature wall?

One of our 40 in-house wallpaper hangers, for example Kai or Illias, who have both worked with us for 5 years. All 97 tradespeople are permanently employed by us. If the rest of the wall needs painting or the wall needs repairing first, we plan that ourselves in the same job.

When you apply, give us the dimensions of the wall and the wallpaper you have chosen. You will then have the free quote within 24 hours. During the site survey we measure the wall, check whether it is straight and flat enough and calculate using the pattern repeat of your wallpaper. Our wallpapering work carries a 1-year guarantee.

If you want to have more walls done in one go, that is possible with all our wallpapering work, from renovation fleece to luxury wallpaper. And if it really is just that one wall, you can simply hire one of our tradespeople for a one-off job.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Which wall do you choose as a feature wall in the living room?

Usually the wall you look at from the sofa or the dining table, or the wall behind the sofa. A wall without a window or door is the calmest option, because the pattern then runs on uninterrupted. A wall with many sockets or a chimney breast needs more cutting.

How high do you wallpaper a half wall?

There is no fixed height; it depends on the room and the furniture. Many people have the line match something that is already in the room, such as the height of a windowsill or a headboard. What matters is that the line is set out level and not measured from the floor.

Can you wallpaper part of a long wall?

Yes. Make the transition coincide with a logical point, such as a corner, a window frame or an alcove, so that the edge of the wallpaper looks like an intended line. In the middle of a flat wall, a vertical transition stands out strongly.

Do you paint the rest of the wall before or after wallpapering?

Paint first and wallpaper afterwards. That way no paint gets on the wallpaper, and the edge of the wallpaper covers the transition neatly. Painting walls in RAL 9010 or 9016 costs €12.99 per m² for one coat with us, excluding VAT.
