Replacing interior doors: cost per door and finishing

Geert Jan Hendrik, director of Bouwsector BelgiëBy the Bouwsector België team, 97 in-house tradespeople · reviewed by Geert Jan Hendrik, director · updated

Replacing interior doors typically costs €150 to €800 per door in Belgium, fitting included. Just rehanging a door costs €55 to €75 for an overlap door and €65 to €100 for a flush door; if the door frame also has to be replaced, there is another €200 to €600 of work on top.

New timber doors often arrive primed, and they still have to be painted afterwards. At Bouwsector België, our own contractor teams rehang the doors and our own painters paint them, from €249.99 per door with frame, excluding VAT. For renovation work on a home over 10 years old, VAT is usually 6%; otherwise it is 21%.

What does replacing interior doors cost per door?

The price depends on three things: the door itself, whether the frame stays, and how the door is finished. These are the typical amounts:

ItemPer doorType of price
New interior door, fitting included€ 150 to € 800Guide price, exact after the consultation
Rehanging an overlap door in an existing frame€ 55 to € 75Guide price
Rehanging a flush door in an existing frame€ 65 to € 100Guide price
Extra work for a new frame€ 200 to € 600Guide price
Painting an interior door, timber, RAL 9010 or 9016from € 139.99Our fixed price
Sanding and painting an interior door and framefrom € 249.99Our fixed price

Guide prices are typical prices in Belgium in 2026; public overviews are not consistent about VAT. Our own prices come from the 2026/2027 price list, valid from 1 September 2026, and exclude VAT. For a home over 10 years old that is usually 6% VAT, otherwise 21%.

A worked example for a home with seven interior doors, where the frames stay. Rehanging seven overlap doors typically costs €385 to €525, excluding the doors themselves. Sanding and painting seven doors with frames costs from 7 × €249.99 = €1,749.93 with us.

In this example the painting is therefore a bigger item than the rehanging. When choosing a door, pay attention to how it is supplied: primed or already painted.

Overlap or flush: which door fits your frame?

An overlap door closes with a rim over the frame. A flush door sits level inside the frame. Flush looks sleeker, but rehanging takes more time: typically 1.5 to 2.5 hours per door, whereas an overlap door hangs much faster.

Switching typeUsually needs a new frame, and so work on the wall around it

Interior doors come in standard sizes. If your frame deviates from them, which often happens in older homes, the door is made to measure or trimmed. We see that when measuring up.

If you want to switch from overlap to flush, the frame has to come out. That damages the wall around the frame, which then has to be replastered and repainted. Include that in your budget, as with a new wall with a door opening.

What has to happen once the new doors are hung?

Timber interior doors are often supplied primed or with a factory coating. That layer is a pre-treatment, not a final finish. It protects the timber and helps the paint adhere, but it wears and gets dirty quickly if left as it is.

Our painters degrease the door, sand where needed and paint it in RAL 9010 or 9016. If you have the door and frame done together, you get them back in one colour and one gloss level. With many doors at once in an empty home, you can also have your interior doors spray-painted.

If you choose a door that is already painted at the factory, the painting of the door itself falls away. The frame then remains a point of attention: does the old colour still suit the new door? Painting an interior door frame costs from €119.99 each with us, just as when you have window frames and doors painted.

Isn’t it better to repaint your old interior doors?

If they hang straight and close well, often yes. A timber door that is merely dull, yellowed or damaged in its paint looks well cared for again after sanding and painting. With us that costs from €139.99 per door, less than a new door with fitting.

Replacing pays off if the door is warped, closes badly or lets through too much sound. Or if you want a different look, such as sleek flush doors or doors with glass. In a complete renovation the doors often go too, because everything happens in one schedule anyway.

If you are unsure, in the consultation we put the two routes side by side: refurbishing or replacing, with what each costs.

How do you have your interior doors replaced by us?

Request a quote or call us on working days between 9:00 and 17:00. Tell us the number of doors, whether they are overlap or flush doors and whether the frames can stay. In the free consultation we discuss the doors and the finishing, and then you receive a plan and a quote.

If you agree, we measure up and check the frames and walls. The final price and schedule are then fixed, and we start on the day we agree together. The order: first any new frames and the wall around them, then the doors, and finally the painting.

One of our four in-house contractor teams of four people each does the rehanging. The painting is done by our own painters: 25 of our 97 in-house tradespeople. We work throughout Belgium (Flanders, Brussels and Wallonia) and, as a contractor, also take on the complete renovation of your home.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What does it cost to have an interior door fitted?

A new interior door with fitting typically costs €150 to €800 in Belgium, depending on the door and whether the frame stays. A new frame adds typically €200 to €600 of work. You will hear the exact price after the free consultation.

What does rehanging a door cost?

Rehanging an overlap door in an existing frame typically costs €55 to €75, a flush door €65 to €100. A flush door takes more time, typically 1.5 to 2.5 hours per door. The painting afterwards is a separate item.

Can you hang a flush door in an overlap frame?

Usually not. A flush door sits level in the frame and needs a flush frame; switching type almost always means a new frame. That damages the wall around it, so also allow for plastering and painting around the door.

Does a new interior door still need painting?

Often yes. Timber interior doors are usually supplied primed or with a factory coating, and that layer is not a final finish. Painting an interior door costs from €139.99 with us, with frame from €249.99, excluding VAT.

Is it better to have my old interior doors painted?

If they hang straight and close well, often yes. Sanding and painting costs from €139.99 per door with us, less than a new door with fitting. Replacing pays off for warped or badly closing doors, or if you want a different look.
