What Does Exterior Painting Cost? Why It Is Always on Request

Why is there no fixed price for exterior painting?

Indoors we can work with fixed m² prices, because an interior wall or interior door takes little wear. Outside, window frames, doors and facades stand for years in sun, rain and frost. Two homes of the same type can therefore be very different.

Applying the paint is only part of the job. The biggest difference lies in what has to happen beforehand. The price depends on that, and you only see it when someone looks at the wood up close.

A price given remotely assumes wood without surprises. If wood rot turns up during sanding, that price goes up afterwards. We therefore look first and only then give a price.

What does exterior painting cost per m² or for a whole house?

A price per m² works poorly for exterior painting. A window frame is not a flat surface, but a profile with rebates, corners and glazing beads. A semi-detached house with lots of small windows can be more work than a bigger house with a few large windows.

That is why we do not quote an average price for a terraced house or a detached house either. An average says nothing about your window frames. From us you receive a quote for your home, with the elements and the preparation itemised.

Indoors it is different. For interior frames, interior doors and walls we do have fixed from-prices. If you have your window frames and doors painted indoors, you know in advance where you stand. The same goes for what a painter costs when it comes to your interior walls.

What should you look for in an exterior painting quote?

Because there is no fixed price, it is important that a quote shows exactly what will happen. If you are comparing quotes, set these points side by side.

If the preparation is missing from a quote, a lower price is often no advantage. The preparation determines how long the paint stays on.

Why don’t you get a price for exterior painting straight away?

Because a price given remotely is rarely right for exterior work. For interior work you receive a quote within 24 hours based on a price indication, but for exterior painting we come and look first: wood rot and loose paint do not show up in a photo.

What you get in return is a price based on your own window frames, not on a photo or an estimate. With exterior painting, that is the difference between a quote that is right and an invoice that turns out higher once wood rot appears.

When do you schedule exterior painting, and how long does it last?

For preference we paint outdoors between April and October, at a temperature between 8 and 25 °C and low humidity. For us that is the best period for exterior painting, and that is when we schedule the work.

Well-executed exterior painting lasts 6 to 8 years on average. That depends on the surface, the colour and how much sun and rain a facade takes.

So request your quote in good time. If you have us take a look in winter, we can start in spring as soon as the weather allows.

What happens when you have exterior painting done?

The work is done by one of our 25 in-house painters. With your request, say how many window frames, windows and doors there are, upstairs as well, and when the exterior was last painted. We then know at the site survey what to look out for.

Exterior painting carries a 3-year guarantee, interior painting 1 year. If scaffolding is needed, we arrange it. It is hired in externally, and the cost of that is added.

We do not paint uPVC window frames. Wooden window frames, doors and facades we do.

You can also simply hire a painter from us, and indoors we are just as happy to take on the painting of your walls. If an exterior wall first needs rendering, then the rendering of that exterior wall is, like exterior painting, on request.
