The biggest difference lies in the tile itself. On its own, ceramic tile usually costs €15 to €80 per m² and natural stone €30 to €160. Large tiles and natural stone need more care when laying, and you see that in the laying work.
Work it out for a 50 m² ground floor. Ceramic tiles, laid, cost €2,500 to €5,000. If an old tiled floor has to come out first, that adds €750 to €1,500, and if the screed is then not flat, having the floor levelled costs another €600 to €1,500.
Is a tiled floor suitable for underfloor heating?
Yes, tiles conduct heat well. Ceramic and natural stone tiles have an average thermal resistance of 0.04 m²K/W. Flooring suppliers set a limit of 0.15 m²K/W for underfloor heating, for the floor and underlay together, and a tiled floor stays well below that.
A tile is glued directly onto the screed, with no soft underlay in between. With a vinyl click floor or laminate, the underlay does count, and that is where the difference lies in vinyl or laminate on underfloor heating.
If a new tiled floor goes onto an existing screed with underfloor heating, you should allow about a week of drying time for the new floor, according to common guidelines. If you first want the underfloor heating routed into the existing screed, that costs €825 to €2,200 according to a public price overview.
Do you lay the tiled floor before or after the walls?
After the walls. Plaster, ladders and paint do not belong on a new floor, and plaster residue in the grout lines of a tiled floor is hard to get out. This is how we schedule a 50 m² ground floor:
Step
How long it takes
Plastering walls ready for painting
A plasterer averages 100 m² per day; according to Knauf, gypsum plaster is dry after about 4 weeks
Or renovlies on flat walls
A complete home is hung, filled and painted in 3 days
Levelling the screed
According to Forbo Eurocol, their levelling compound 990 at a 5 mm layer is ready for the floor after 24 hours
Laying and grouting tiles
A tiler lays 10 to 20 m² of floor tiles per day, so 50 m² in 3 to 5 days
If you choose renovlies on the walls, the tiler can start after a few days. With plasterwork you wait about four weeks. We keep to the same order in finishing a new-build home: ceiling, walls, woodwork, floor and skirting boards.
Isn’t a tiled floor cold and hard?
Without underfloor heating, a tiled floor feels cooler than vinyl or laminate, and it is harder. If a glass drops, it is more likely to break. With underfloor heating that turns around: the tile is then a floor that lets heat through easily.
In an apartment, noise matters too. A tiled floor is a hard floor, and many VMEs (owners’ associations) set a minimum level of sound insulation for it. When renovating an apartment, a sound-insulating layer that meets the rules is therefore laid under the tiles.
If you are torn between tiles and another floor, compare the price per m². Glued vinyl for the same 50 m² typically costs €2,500 to €4,250, and having vinyl, laminate or herringbone laid usually costs €30 to €100 per m² including materials.
How do you have a tiled floor laid by us?
Request a quote or call us on weekdays between 9:00 and 17:00. Tell us the m² of floor per room, which tile you want, what is on the floor now and whether there is or will be underfloor heating. In a free advice meeting we discuss the choice, and afterwards you receive a tailor-made quote.
If you agree, we measure up and check the substrate and the walls. The final price and schedule are then fixed, and we start on the day we agree together. You pay 50% on the first working day, once all materials are on site and we have started, and 50% on completion.
The tiled floor is laid by our four in-house contractor teams of four people each. In addition, our 97 in-house specialists finish the walls and ceilings: 40 wallpaperers, 32 plasterers and 25 painters. We work throughout Belgium (Flanders, Brussels and Wallonia) and, as a contractor, also take on the complete renovation of your home.

Can you lay tiles on underfloor heating?
Yes, tiles are well suited to it. They have an average thermal resistance of 0.04 m²K/W, well below the 0.15 m²K/W limit that flooring suppliers use. After laying on a screed with underfloor heating, allow about a week of drying time.
Is a tiled floor more expensive than vinyl?
