What Do You Need to Do Before the Wallpaper Hanger Arrives?

Geert Jan Hendrik, director of Bouwsector BelgiëBy the Bouwsector België team, 97 in-house tradespeople · reviewed by Geert Jan Hendrik, director · updated

Before the wallpaper hanger arrives you hardly need to do anything: make sure we can reach the walls, take pictures and shelves off the wall, and choose your colour in advance. We take care of the wallpaper, the adhesive and the paint, and the sanding, hanging, filling and painting.

The most important work is actually done earlier: at the site survey you tell us what we need to know about your home.

Our own wallpaper hangers bring the materials and hang, fill and paint in a single job, at a fixed price per m².

What does the wallpaper hanger take care of, and what do you do yourself?

With us, the split is simple. The skilled work and the materials are our side; access to the space and a few choices are yours.

Checklist: what do you do in the week before the wallpaper hanger arrives?

  1. Clear the walls. Move large cupboards, beds and sofas out of the work area or into the middle of the room.
  2. Take everything off the wall. Pictures, shelves, mirrors and loose hooks. If you are unsure about fixed brackets, such as for a TV, ask what will happen with them.
  3. Clear away small items. Pack up or put elsewhere whatever is on windowsills and cupboards. We clear the rest together before we start.
  4. Confirm your colour. In our package we paint in RAL 9010 or 9016. A RAL colour of your choice costs €1.50 per m² extra.
  5. Make sure the wallpaper is there, if you choose it yourself. With patterned or photo wallpaper you choose the wallpaper yourself. You also order photo wallpaper yourself, with the dimensions from the site survey.
  6. Arrange access. Agree who will be there when we arrive, or how we get in. For a new-build home, that means: the keys have been handed over.

Prices exclude VAT. For the renovation of a home more than 10 years old, VAT is usually 6%.

If you deliberately want a colour other than white, take the time to choose a colour for your painted walls. And if you choose wallpaper yourself, it is either patterned wallpaper or photo wallpaper on a single wall.

What is useful to mention about your walls at the site survey?

A few things we cannot see from the wall, but they do affect the schedule or the quote. Mention them during the phone consultation or the site survey:

  • Which walls and rooms need to be included, including the ceilings, the hall and the stairwell.
  • Whether there is old wallpaper on them and whether you want to remove it yourself or have us do it.
  • What will go on the wall later, such as curtain tracks, a TV or heavy cupboards.
  • The age of the home, especially if it was built a long time ago and an old layer has to come off.
  • Whether you will keep living in the home during the work, so that we can plan room by room.
  • The temperature in the home, for an empty home in winter: Intervos specifies that its adhesives should not be applied below 5 °C.

Together, these points also determine how long it takes to have your home wallpapered.

Do you have to get the walls ready for wallpapering yourself?

No. You do not have to fill holes, sand or prime the walls yourself. At the site survey we assess whether a wall is ready for wallpapering, and what is needed is stated in the quote.

Doing preparation yourself can even make things harder. A wall that has been primed with ordinary wall paint or repaired with the wrong filler sometimes needs extra work. A wall that is ready for wallpapering has to meet four conditions, and we prefer to check those ourselves.

If you want to remove old wallpaper yourself to save money, agree that with us and also remove all adhesive residue. New wallpaper adheres poorly to old adhesive. So include the removal of the adhesive residue in your own work.

Who comes to do the wallpapering, and what happens on the day?

One of our 40 own wallpaper hangers comes, from a team of 97 permanent tradespeople, and the same crew stays from start to finish. They sand the wall, hang the drops tightly edge to edge, seal the edges at windows, doors and skirting boards, and paint one coat. With renovation fleece, a whole home is hung, filled and painted in 3 days.

If more preparation turns out to be needed during the work than was visible at the site survey, we will first consult you before continuing. At handover we go through the walls together, and our wallpapering work carries a 1 year guarantee.

If you do not have a quote yet, you will receive one free of charge within 24 hours, based on what you tell us about the points above. We hang various types of wallpaper, each with its own price.

At the site survey and wall inspection we take the measurements ourselves, so that the final price and the schedule are fixed afterwards.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to buy wallpaper and adhesive myself before the wallpaper hanger arrives?

Not with renovation fleece and glass fleece: the Intervos wallpaper, the adhesive and the Sigma paint are included in our price per m². Only with patterned or photo wallpaper do you choose the wallpaper yourself. If you want to supply the material yourself, a lower price per m² applies.

Does the room have to be completely empty for wallpapering?

It does not have to be completely empty, but the walls must be clear and accessible. Preferably move large furniture out of the work area yourself, or into the middle of the room. We clear smaller items together with you before we start.

Do I have to sand or prime the walls myself?

No. Sanding is always included in our wallpapering package, and we assess at the site survey whether a wall needs priming or repair. What is needed is then stated in the final quote.

Do I need to be at home when the wallpaper hanger arrives?

At the start it is useful if someone is there to go through the rooms and the final choices, or if access has been properly agreed beforehand. At handover we go through the walls with you. We agree the schedule with you in advance.

Can I remove old wallpaper myself before you come?

You can, if you agree it with us beforehand. Also remove all adhesive residue and let the wall dry, because new wallpaper adheres poorly to old adhesive. If you have us do it, removal costs from €6.99 per m² for one layer of paper wallpaper, excluding VAT.
